Modern dentists are very much in tune with the current sophisticated and modern technologies used in the field of cosmetic dentistry. You could rely on dentists practicing in the area for a number of special dental procedures that could be of great significance for health, comfort, and of course aesthetic reasons. People’s need for many cosmetic dentistry products and services has really evolved and widened over time. That is why modern-age dentists make sure they are always updated and are skilled to perform the latest and breaking-through dental industry practices for their patients.

It is just logical why cosmetic dentistry has continued to gain further popularity. Many people believe their smiles make first and lasting impressions to others. How could you get that confidence if you are ashamed and embarrassed to smile because of stained teeth? Would you feel secured on yourself and your overall appearance if you have missing front teeth? Needless to say, cosmetic dentistry has become among the most sought-after medical and expert fields today.

Dental implants are among the popular dental products and services that are demanded by a growing number of people. The products are part of services rendered in cosmetic dentistry. There are only several dentists who are equipped and trained to perform this dental surgical operation. But you could easily find those dental surgeons so your goal to have better and more naturally looking and feeling dentures would surely be realized.

There are more to dental implants aside from the fact that they could help boost a person’s overall aesthetic appeal. Many people prefer such implants not just because the false teeth could make then regain their killer and confident smiles but because such teeth could also make them feel how it is to have teeth once again. However, because of high-quality of materials and technology used, this cosmetic dentistry procedure is usually costly.

Modern dental implants make use of the latest technology. Titanium is the latest reliable and durable material used for the production of dentures. Because of its hard-surface property and lightness, titanium implants are preferred by more dental patients. The items would be implanted into the patients’ gums, making them look and feel really natural.

The titanium false teeth are surgically implanted into the patient’s jaw bone. The bone structure is also realigned to give support for the implanted dentures and for bridges and crowns. It usually takes about six months for such implants to heal and fully integrate naturally with the jawbone. The dental surgeon would then take turn to check the implant, put a temporary crown and restore proper function and state of the surrounding gum.

There are currently dental surgeons who could really help out patients with problems that need surgical implantation of dentures. Such implants last up to 20 years on the average. Dental patients could easily deal with any dental problems nowadays. Cosmetic dentistry in this regard is not just useful for aesthetic purposes; it could also help people take improvements in the overall quality of their lives.

Dental implants are one of the most popular services and products in cosmetic dentistry. They are teeth-like materials that are attached permanently to the gums to act as replacement for missing teeth. Dental implants are more like dentures, but are different in that they are permanently fixed into gums and are not removable unless under the assistance of a dentist. Usually, oral implants are made of titanium, one of the rare metals that are appropriately tolerated by the human body.

Who are candidates to have dental implants? The procedure is available for people who have lost teeth due to an injury, a disease, or some other reasons. Implants are ideal options if you want to have natural-looking and natural-feeling false teeth, something that could not be possible by just merely using dentures. In other cases, people who are not contented with how their teeth are aligned opt to take dental implants. Logically, their natural teeth will have to be removed first before implants are put into place.

There are two general types of dental implants available today. First, the Endosteal uses cylinders, screws, or blades in surgically placing prosthetic teeth into the jawbone. Because of this, an implant is holding one or more false teeth. Endosteal is the most prevalent type of dental implants and is used as an effective alternative for people with existing bridges and removable dentures.

Subperiosteal dental implants are surgically placed on top of the patient’s jaw. They are metal framework that protrudes through the gum, facilitating or holding the false teeth. This second type of dental implants is more recommended and applied to patients who are found to have minimum bone height. People who are not able to wear any kind of removable dentures are qualified to have subperiosteal dental implants instead.

Dental implant procedures could be a little complicated and could require application of anesthesia. It is important that only qualified, accredited, and well-trained cosmetic dentists or orthodontists conduct the procedures. Dental implants have been around for more than three decades. The number of qualified dentists performing the activity is still low, but through the years, more and more dentists are undergoing post-graduate courses and training so they could very well conduct the procedure. Take note that dentists with post-graduate degrees are the only ones qualified and skilled to perform the procedure.

These days, dental implants are also regarded as an effective strategy in orthodontics. In many cases, the implant are used to simplify or streamline any orthodontic therapy, decreasing treatment frequency and eliminating dependence on patients’ compliance in wearing orthodontic appliances and making adjustments. When there is a need for any tooth replacement, dental implants are recommended and applied by orthodontists.

Are you ready to have dental implants? If you are not confident in your own smiles because of your missing teeth, or if your dentures do not allow you to chew, speak, and smile comfortably, it is time you seek cosmetic dentists who are licensed and qualified to perform the procedures for the implants. It is a good thing cosmetic dentistry has this service.

About 5% to 15% of Americans experience temporomandibular joint or TMJ disorder, according to research conducted by the US National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. The study also noted that the disease afflicts more women than men, a trend that is still to be further explored for more accurate explanation. Women aged 30 to 50 years old are at most risk. TMJ disorder is a common condition affecting the jaw area. It is characterized by improper alignment of the jaw. Fortunately, cosmetic dentistry is also covering remedies for this problem.

The condition occurs when the temporomandibular joint is misaligned. TMJ is basically the connecting joint between the lower jaw and the skull. Its main function is to facilitate proper functioning of the jaw. Thus, it is most important when talking and eating, activities when the jaw are working the most. When the TMJ is strain or stressed, TMJ disorder may occur. Aside from over-opening of the jaws, there are several other factors that cause the disorder. These include: jaw thrusting due to speech habits; excessive jaw movements; excessive chewing; nail biting; massive sizes of food eaten; clenching of teeth; tooth grinding while asleep; jaw, shoulder and neck tension; and arthritis.

Everyone could possibly contract or experience TMJ disorder. Thus, it is important to take note of the main symptoms of the condition, which include the following: inability to open the mouth widely; pain when biting or opening the mouth; tension in the lower jaw muscles; pain in the jaw area when yawning or chewing; painful gritting, popping and clicking of the jaw joint; locked jaw; and adjoining headache, facial pain and neck pain.

If you are suffering from TMJ disorder, based on the above-mentioned symptoms, there is a need to consult a neuromuscular dentist at once. Such a dentist is specializing in the realignment of the jaw and in the elimination of problems caused by TMJ disorder. Expect the neuromuscular dentist to initially gather information about your medical history. Prepare to undergo tests and observation to identify problems and symptoms. However, if such a dentist is not to be found, a cosmetic dentist could be a viable alternative. Some cosmetic dentists are generally trained to perform dental surgeries as well. They are easier to find because demand for their services are more common.

There are several treatment options to choose from if you are diagnosed with TMJ disorder. Administration of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs of NSAIDs is on top of the list as they provide complete relief from pain. The dentist could also prescribe tricyclic antidepressants, Cortico steroids, and muscle relaxants, which should be taken in moderation and in care as they could be highly addicting.

There are also some types of devices that are designed to correct improper TMJ conditions. For instance, a bite guard will have to be worn at night when sleeping to effectively curtail unnecessary grinding of the teeth. In some cases, orthotics has been proven to be effective in gradually treating TMJ disorder.

It is worn over the teeth to correct alignment when biting. Many cosmetic dentistry solutions could also be useful in relieving and resolving the condition.

Most people dread going to the dentist. I guess, it has already been ingrained in our culture to be scared of going getting a doctor’s appointment and having a painful tooth extraction. But going to the dentist is a reality that we need to recognize especially if we want to have a really great smile.

And that is precisely what makes cosmetic dentistry different from ordinary dentistry— a great smile. Ordinary dentistry just seeks to make sure that we have a set of fully-functioning teeth that we can use to chew our food. It makes sure that we do not have cavities and teeth that are rotting away. It emphasizes good hygiene and nothing else. But with cosmetic dentistry, the emphasis is different. Like cosmetic surgery, the emphasis is on the way we appear to other people.

Cosmetic dentistry do not just take care of the health of our teeth, it also takes care of the way it looks. This means that the procedures that patients of cosmetic dentistry have to go through do not just involve one or two simple procedures like cleaning and extraction, it might also involve whitening of the teeth and putting braces. Some will even have to go through a root canal procedure (which is awfully painful) even when the teeth are not rotting or sawing the teeth off so that it can be replaced by a fake one.

It is also important that you go to a cosmetic dentist and not just to any dentist. Remember that these two are not the same and while cosmetic dentists can perform the procedures that ordinary dentists do, the latter do not have the training, experience and the aesthetics to make people’s smiles perfect. So check your dentist and make sure that he or she has actually performed cosmetic dentistry procedures before.

In other words, when you are planning to have cosmetic dentistry, don’t expect to finish the entire program with just one or three visits to the dentist. It will for sure involve several visits especially when there are a lot of things that you need to fix with your teeth. These procedures can be so expensive when all the procedures are added up that some decide to not go through it while others bail after the initial procedures are done.

This is why it is very important that you know more about cosmetic dentistry first before actually making the decision. It is important you are 100 percent committed to it, otherwise, you would have only just wasted your time and your money.

Often, people who get cosmetic dentistry procedures are those whose smiles are crucial to their jobs and careers like maybe a movie star or a model, or even somebody whose job involve meeting a lot of clients and presenting to them. When you need to be presentable in your work and looks is a big factor like a job in the sales, in the entertainment and in the marketing industries, a cosmetic dentistry is right for you.

Traditional dentistry is basically centered on general oral hygiene – diagnosing, preventing and treating oral diseases on a person. Cosmetic dentistry, on the other hand, is generally viewed as focused more on the improvement of a person’s appearance by way of his teeth, mouth and smile.

Cosmetic dentistry is more on providing desired treatments and services ordered by the patient. These treatments and services provide restorative benefits and not just from the point of view of aesthetics.

An example would be the case of simple dental fillings. In the old days, dental fillings are made of gold, amalgam and other materials that leave dark spots on the teeth.

Today, you may choose the color of your dental fillings made of porcelain or composite materials that match the color of your natural teeth. In this regard, dental fillings fall under the category of cosmetic dentistry.

There are now more dental services categorized under cosmetic dentistry at present.

Inlays /onlays / bonding

Inlays and onlays are also known as indirect fillings. These are long-lasting cosmetic fillings for teeth with structural damages caused by tooth decay and the like.

They are made in dental laboratories before being fitted and bonded into place by adhesives. (In the old days, fillings were painstakingly molded into place within the mouth during dental visits.)

Composite bonding corrects teeth that are broken, chipped, decayed or discolored. The composite material (looking like enamel and dentin to blend with the patient’s natural teeth color) are applied into the cavity, sculpted and shaped into place, and hardened by lasers.

Teeth whitening

This is one of the most common cosmetic dental services availed of today. Teeth stained from smoking, food and colored drinks (and maybe also due to poor oral hygiene) are treated by bleaching them, thus enhancing one’s smile.

Dental veneers

These are laminates made of composites or porcelain that are bonded to the surface of the tooth to correct and repair chips, cracks, worn appearance or severe teeth discoloration.

Sometimes, they are administered to correct gaps in the teeth, or dark surfaces not corrected by teeth whitening.

Dental implants

These are artificial tooth root replacements used in prosthetic (artificial replacement) dentistry. These are to replace a missing tooth (or more) in the gums to project a perfect set of teeth.

This procedure results in enhanced, healthy-looking smile in a person. (A perfect set of teeth projects health.)

Smile makeover

Basically, this is a comprehensive assessment in the aesthetics of your smile (crooked, ugly, lopsided, etc.) and the procedures to improve its overall appearance. This may take not just one or two cosmetic dentistry procedures.

These can include dental veneers, implants, gingival (gums) sculpting, teeth whitening and other procedures on both lower and upper dental arches.

Full mouth reconstruction

This procedure basically provides treatment to correct altogether the many functional problems with your mouth, your bite, related muscles, teeth and bone structure.

With today’s available materials and technology, this procedure can be executed by a competent cosmetic dental professional to give you those natural-looking enhancements.

For people who are not pleased with the color, size or shape of their teeth, including the way their mouths open when they smile, cosmetic dentistry might just be able to help.

In the past, people with crooked teeth have to live with them for the rest of their lives suffering all kinds of associated indignities. Fortunately, today’s cosmetic dentistry can align crooked teeth with every available procedure even on an outpatient basis.

Some people who are self-conscious about their smile caused by crooked teeth have several options now beyond the old braces. The following are some of the best cosmetic dentistry procedures for crooked teeth.

Invisalign

Invisalign needs your budget and your patience when your cosmetic dentist will work on your forthcoming beautiful smile in a few months. It actually is a set of very strong, clear plastic removable teeth aligners.

Invisalign works by squeezing the teeth into position. This set of teeth aligners is strong enough to shift your affected teeth into their ideal positions. After a few months, you will see the significant shift of your teeth moving into their natural positions in the mouth.

However, Invisalign is not suited for everyone. If the teeth and the gums are not strong enough to support the tension created by these plastic braces, your dentist can recommend accelerated orthodontics.

This new procedure may also require that you undergo reconstructive procedures to bring your teeth and gums back into a healthier, stronger state.

Porcelain veneers

Among the most popular treatments for correcting crooked teeth are porcelain veneers.
For one, it can help create a natural-looking smile.

Porcelain veneers can be applied to the teeth in just one or two sessions with your cosmetic dentist. Sometimes, it requires shaving a part of the teeth to ensure a perfect fit.

Another happy fact is that the cost of veneers can be significantly lower than the cost of braces or Invisalign. Moreover, you can enjoy the results of the procedure in just a few weeks after the last treatment.

Tooth contouring

Another inexpensive treatment in correcting crooked teeth is tooth contouring and reshaping. This is the procedure where the dentist scrapes off a portion of the existing tooth enamel. Next, the dentist will then place a bonding compound or a veneer directly on the tooth (or teeth, as the case may be).

Afterwards, the dentist may use a drill or laser to sculpt and shape the sides of the new tooth and the existing one. This will become the perfect new bonded tooth that will form part in the shaping of that picture-perfect smile.

Accelerated orthodontics

Accelerated orthodontics is for people with crooked teeth who cannot wait for months to get results from traditional braces or Invisalign. If they will choose this option, they will have to undergo a series of painful procedures and frequent visits to the dental clinic.

Accelerated orthodontics is where the dentist will perform intensive reshaping and re-contouring of the gums and tooth (or teeth). This treatment for crooked teeth uses both laser technologies and conventional surgical procedures.

In some cases, patients are required to wear lingual braces for a certain period of time so that the teeth can adjust to the procedure.

Today’s crooked teeth need not be a curse on the owner anymore. Aided by science and the artistry of your cosmetic dentist, your picture-perfect smile will belie the story that you once had crooked teeth.

In cosmetic dentistry, dental bonding is also known as composite or tooth bonding. This is the process that fixes cosmetic and structural imperfections in the teeth. While dentists call them direct composite veneers, many simply refer to them generically as “dental bonding.”

Dental bonding is used to repair cracked, chipped, and discolored teeth including the replacement of silver fillings. It can also repair misaligned teeth, thereby giving the patient a straighter and more uniform smile.

This material can also be directly applied and sculpted to the surfaces of teeth that are prominently displayed during a smile. (This is termed as a minimally invasive smile makeover.)

Procedure

The first part is the material selection process. This is where the cosmetic dentist chooses the right tone of the composite resin (white or natural-looking dental bonding materials) to match the patient’s own natural shade of teeth.

The start of the bonding process is when the dentist uses a rubber dam to isolate the tooth (or teeth). This is to prevent moisture interference on the tooth. Depending on the extent of the treatment, there might be a need for anesthetic injections.

Next, the dentist roughens the existing tooth for the resin to adhere properly. He will then apply a gentle phosphoric acid solution on the tooth’s surface (which does not hurt) and removes it after 15 seconds.

The resin is then carefully applied to the tooth, is shaped and smoothed to achieve the desired look.

The formed resin material is then hardened with the aid of a high intensity light. Once it is of correct hardness, the bonded tooth is then buffed and polished to match the appearance and shaped of the surrounding teeth.

Because a dental plan had already been prepared by the dentist after the initial visit, the direct composite bonding procedure usually is completed in one dental visit. Of course, this will still depend on the extent of the needed tooth repair.

Even if the treatment goes over for two or more visits, the results can be quite pleasing.

Benefits

There are several benefits for patients in the tooth bonding process. For starters, it is quick, affordable, virtually painless, and the result can last long.

Dental bonding is a good alternative to the more extensive (and expensive) treatment with porcelain veneers, bridges and crowns.

The composite resin used in the cosmetic bonding process is very flexible. It expands and contracts with the natural tooth, thereby preventing cracks and tooth loss.

Costs

Cosmetic dentistry financing has always been a primary concern with many patients. For tooth bonding, the cost varies according to the number of teeth repaired. Sometimes, the cost varies depending on the areas where the dental procedure is preformed.

Insurance carriers usually cover tooth bonding, especially if it is done for structural reasons. Likewise, many cosmetic dentists have financing plans available for their patients.

Nowadays, dental procedures like tooth bonding are already affordable to patients of all financial backgrounds. The way that dental bonding work wonders on your teeth (alignment, whitening, and overall improvement of appearance) is a good enough reason to pay for the cosmetic dentistry cost.

A study by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry has found up to 96% of US citizens think a gorgeous smile is important when getting attention of the opposite sex. There are many people who are not confident about their own smiles. Moreover, dental conditions top the list of usual problems that hound people. It is not surprising to note that cosmetic dentistry is among the most sought-after medical procedures today.

This practice stands as a budding segment of dentistry. To have shinier, whiter, and more beautiful teeth, approach a cosmetic dentist to find out how your overall appeal as well as beauty of your smile could be bolstered. He could assess your needs and help you attain that perfect killer smile you dream of possessing. Here are several dental cosmetic options available.

Tooth whitening or bleaching is the top and most in-demand cosmetic dentistry procedure today. The service is conducted to aid patients in attaining whiter and brighter teeth, so that smiles are made more appealing and charming. Other than dental procedures conducted at a dentist’s clinic, cosmetic dentistry usually recommends actions and medications that could be applied even at home. Proper and appropriate consultation must be achieved before taking any procedure to whiten teeth. The service is the cheapest, simplest, and most painless cosmetic dentistry procedure.

Dental implants are undoubtedly the second most popular procedure required in cosmetic dentists’ clinics. They are generally artificial teeth, like dentures, that are put to replace missing teeth. You would regain a natural looking and very confident smile. However, there could be surgical procedure involved. Thus, patients are required to be in good oral and physical health before the procedure. This surgical procedure is usually advised for patients with healthier gums and at the same time reliable bone structure to support the implants. Before the popularity of such dental implants, dentures were very popular as teeth replacements. Dentures are still popular today as alternatives that cosmetic dentists offer to patients who lack teeth.

Other cosmetic dentistry services and products include veneers, braces, bonds, crowns and bridges. Veneers are customized structures resembling shells that are attached to cover front side of a tooth, which has been chipped, crooked, poorly shaped, or permanently stained. Braces are orthodontic tools used for correcting and aligning crowded as well as crooked teeth. Meanwhile, teeth-binding helps improve overall appearance of chipped, broken, and cracked teeth. It uses application of materials, which resemble the tooth enamel.

Teeth crowns serve as covers that help add support for weak teeth. A crown is also improving outward appearance as well as overall strength of any problematic tooth. Bridges are alloys, porcelain, or gold materials that used to replace missing teeth. The materials are directly attached a patient’s jaw or to his gum tissue. Bridges could only be put and removed by any qualified cosmetic dentist. However, there are new versions, which could be easily removed to facilitate teeth-cleaning when needed. Have you decided which cosmetic surgery service to take?

In cosmetic dentistry, dental inlays and onlays are restorative procedures used to repair those rear teeth that suffer from mild to moderate levels of decay. They are also used in restoring any cracked or fractured teeth in case where the damage is not that severe requiring a dental crown restorative procedure.

Inlays and onlays today are usually made from porcelain, composite resin and sometimes the good old gold. Like all the other cosmetic dental procedures today, fillings for inlays and onlays can be made from tooth-colored materials and are often used to replace metal fillings.

Inlays

Dental inlays are used to treat decayed or damaged teeth within their indented top surfaces (aside from replacing old metal fillings).

The procedure is simple and is done in two sessions. The first visit is for making a teeth impression and for placing a temporary inlay. Your dentist sends your impression to a dental lab to make an inlay to match your personal dental specifications.

The second visit is for removal of the temporary inlay and the placement of the permanent one on your teeth. Except for some mild tenderness, you can go to work or return to your other activities right after the process.

Onlays

Where the inlays treat decays within the tooth cusps (top projections) dental onlays are used to treat decays that extend to one or more cusps. Onlays are also placed in much the same way as inlays.

The treatment works much like those done with dental inlays (two sessions, impression-making in the first and permanent placement in the second).

They are also created from tooth-colored materials that make them almost undetectable to the naked eye. Onlays help conserve more tooth structure because they require minimal removal of tooth surface during the bonding process.

Benefits

The biggest benefit for both inlays and onlays is avoiding the need for more extensive treatments using expensive dental crowns, dental bridges or dental implants.

Unlike old metal fillings, inlays and onlays do not expand or contract in contact with hot or cold foods. (Constant changes in size, however minuscule, weakens and eventually fractures the affected tooth.)

Strength and beauty

Because of the way they are made (custom-fitted), they help strengthen teeth by up to 75% their original strength. The durable material used in them helps them last up to 30 years, much longer than the lifespan of regular fillings.

Moreover, dental inlays and onlays can be made from durable, tooth-colored porcelain and offer much more enduring and natural-looking finish than metal fillings.

Also, their customized manufacture allows dentists to securely bond them to the tooth surface. The bond adds structural strength to the tooth and prevents bacteria from entering and forming cavities all over again.

Costs

As is usually the case, costs of porcelain inlays and onlays are also variable and dependent on some factors – the dentist’s experience and expertise, the expense of the lab, cost of materials and others.

Generally, inlays and onlays cost between $700 and $1,200, and averages around $900 total.

Preventing cavities and tooth decay by way of correct brushing of the teeth have always been the battle cry of mothers and dentists ever since. Fortunately, science had developed cosmetic dentistry to help us fight this age-old battle.
